Uganda Cranes edge Senegal 2–1 in CHAN 2024-25 warm-up thriller

The Uganda Cranes registered a vital 2–1 victory over Senegal in the CECAFA Three Nations Tournament on Thursday, boosting morale ahead of the upcoming 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Playing at the Black Rhino Sports Centre in Arusha, Tanzania, Uganda’s squad comprising only domestically-based players delivered a spirited performance to bounce back from a 2–0 loss to hosts Tanzania earlier in the week.
Second-Half spark
After a cagey and goalless first half, the tempo shifted dramatically in the second period. Defender Arnold Odong opened the scoring in the 64th minute, calmly slotting in after connecting with a well-placed corner kick.
Moments later, Uganda doubled their lead from the penalty spot. Substitute Patrick Jonah Kakande confidently converted after Senegalese goalkeeper Marc Philips Arona fouled Jude Ssemugabi inside the area.
Senegal’s late response
Senegal, refusing to go down quietly, mounted a late surge. Substitute Moctar Serigne Koite pulled one back for the Teranga Lions, slipping a low shot past Ugandan substitute goalkeeper Chrispus Kusiima to make it 2–1.
Despite the pressure, Uganda held firm during the closing minutes to seal a crucial win and restore confidence heading into CHAN.
This result will be a welcome lift for coaches Fred Muhumuza and Morley Byekwaso, who are looking to fine-tune the squad before their CHAN Group B opener against Algeria on August 4th at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
The Uganda team is scheduled to depart Arusha on Friday, July 25th, as they continue preparations for the continental showdown.
The CECAFA Three Nations Tournament concludes on Sunday, July 27th, when hosts Tanzania Taifa Stars take on Senegal in the final fixture.
