Uganda Police arrest 16 in connection with election-related violence

The Uganda Police Force has confirmed a series of violent incidents related to the ongoing electoral process, involving assaults, vandalism, and destruction of property.
These events occurred in Mubende, Isingiro, and Rubanda districts, resulting in the arrest of 16 suspects as investigations continue.
Mubende District – 7 July 2025.
At approximately 1600 hours, a violent confrontation broke out at Kyapa Kyeturege Trading Centre between supporters of Mr. Muhumuza Henry and Hon. Kabanda David, both candidates in the NRM primaries.
The two groups crossed paths while returning from campaign activities in Kitera and Gwanika trading centres, respectively.
The encounter escalated into gunfire, injuring Gumisiriza Roger. Others were assaulted using sticks and bricks.
Later, at Nabingola Sub-county headquarters, further violence erupted. Two vehicles—UBP 452K (white Noah) and UBP 788T (Toyota Wish)—and a motorcycle (UFU 345X, Bajaj Boxer) were set ablaze and destroyed.
Police from Mubende Central Police Station responded to contain the situation. The injured were transported to Mubende Regional Hospital, and three suspects were arrested. Statements from witnesses have been recorded, and investigations are ongoing.
Isingiro District – 5 July 2025.
In Kyempisi Cell, Kikagate Sub-county, a similar incident occurred where two motorcycles and one vehicle were burned. Police arrested ten suspects, while others are still at large.
On 7 July, a security meeting was held involving all parties and NRM electoral officials to encourage peaceful conduct during the primaries.
Rubanda District – 3 July 2025
At Hakashanje Playground, located in Nyakahanga Cell, Bushura Parish, Hamuhambo Town Council, violence broke out around 1840 hours. As Hon. Henry Musasizi was leaving the area after giving an address, stones were thrown at his convoy, damaging his vehicle.
Earlier that day, posters belonging to the minister’s campaign were reportedly destroyed. Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the incident.
Police Statement
In total, 16 suspects have been arrested across the three districts, while others have reportedly fled and abandoned their homes.
The Uganda Police Force strongly condemns all acts of violence, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring a peaceful and secure electoral process.
