Kenya Simbas seek redemption in 2025 Rugby Africa Cup

After a disappointing fourth-place finish in the 2023 Rugby Africa Cup marked by a shock 20–12 semifinal loss to Algeria and a defeat by Namibia in the playoff.

The Kenya Simbas return with renewed determination. Their mission: rewrite history at the Mandela National Stadium and secure a coveted spot in the Rugby World Cup.

Road to redemption

The Kenya Rugby Union has left no stone unturned in its preparations:

  • A 53-player provisional squad was initially named.
  • 33 players attended an alignment camp in South Africa.
  • 9 trial matches were played to assess form and combinations.
  • The final 28-man squad has now been selected, blending experience with fresh talent.

Squad composition

  • Kabras Sugar RFC dominance: 13 players (46% of the squad), including captain George Nyambua, hail from the Kenya Cup champions.
  • Limited club representation: Only four other clubs KCB, Menengai Oilers, Strathmore Leos, and KU Blak Blad  have players included.
  • New faces: Four debutants Vincent Mwikhali, Patrick Sabatia, Samuel Ovwamu, and South Africa-based David Bunduki (Griffons Rugby) are set to earn their first caps.
  • Foreign-based players: Bunduki is joined by Thomas Okeyo (Griffons Rugby) and Bethuel Anami (MLSGP 78 Club, France).

Notable inclusions & absences

  • Returning 7s stars: Playmaker Jone Kubu (initially in doubt) joins Samuel Asati and Brian Tanga in transitioning from the shorter format.
  • Injury blows: Experienced scrumhalf Samson Onsomu and electric winger Beldad Ogeta miss out due to injuries.
