Excitement as Uganda launches the King’s Baton relay in Kampala

Kampala came alive on Thursday, 3rd July 2025, as Uganda officially launched the King’s Baton Relay at the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) headquarters in Lugogo.

The atmosphere was electric, with athletes, dignitaries, and sports enthusiasts gathered to mark the occasion.

Held under the theme “Dedication,” the relay goes beyond sport serving as a vibrant celebration of community pride, creative expression, and environmental responsibility.

It forms part of the lead-up to the next edition of the Commonwealth Games, symbolizing unity and shared purpose among Commonwealth nations.

The event was graced by Her Excellency Tiffany Kirlew, the British Deputy High Commissioner to Uganda, who served as the chief guest.

In her address, she highlighted the broader vision behind the relay:

“The King’s Baton Relay transcends sport. It is a movement weaving together community pride, creative expression, and environmental responsibility,” she said.

The launch attracted key figures from Uganda’s sporting landscape, including:

  • Moses Mwase, President of the Commonwealth Games Association of Uganda
  • William Blick, International Olympic Committee (IOC) member
  • Sarah Chelangat, representing the National Council of Sports

They were joined by sports federation leaders, athletes, UOC officials, and members of the media, all contributing to the vibrant and inspiring atmosphere.

As the Baton makes its way through Uganda and beyond, it carries with it a powerful message of unity, resilience, and purpose—values at the heart of both sport and community.

With the successful launch in Kampala, Uganda has set a passionate and purposeful tone for its role in this prestigious international journey.
