Bobi Wine alleges home raid, family assaulted
Ugandan security forces allegedly raided the Magere home of opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) late Friday night, assaulting family members, ransacking the residence, and temporarily detaining his wife, according to accounts from the family, opposition leaders, and a statement posted by Bobi Wine himself.
The alleged raid occurred on the night of January 23, 2026, despite Bobi Wine not being at the residence at the time. The opposition leader has remained in hiding after escaping an earlier security operation at the same home days earlier, following the disputed presidential election.
In a statement shared on Facebook, Dr. Daniel Kawuma said that around 10:30 p.m., video footage emerged from inside the Kyagulanyi residence showing Barbie Kyagulanyi screaming and calling for help, questioning why Uganda police and military officers had breached the home’s security perimeter and entered the compound.
About 30 minutes later, Bobi Wine confirmed the incident on his social media platforms, saying that masked, armed soldiers had broken into the house, beaten family members, and isolated his wife.
“A group of masked, armed soldiers has just broken into our house and beaten my family members. They have currently isolated my wife, Barbie Kyagulanyi, alone. Their intentions are unclear,” Bobi Wine wrote.
National Unity Platform (NUP) spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi, who said he travelled to Magere shortly after receiving alerts of the raid, reported a heavy military presence both inside and outside the compound.
Ssenyonyi said he found dozens of armed personnel, some in uniform and others not, and that he was denied access to the home.
“I have been denied access by the numerous gunmen, who I am told have broken the house doors, assaulted the family and occupants, ransacked the house, and taken all the gadgets they could find,” Ssenyonyi said in a statement posted on his social media accounts.
He added that he spoke to senior police officers seeking clarification on the operation, but was told they were not aware of the raid and did not know who was commanding it.
Family members, including Mikie Wine and musician Dax Vibes, also shared updates online describing a tense situation, restricted communication, and concern for the safety of those inside the residence.
By press time, security agencies had not officially responded to the incident.
