Kyambogo defies red card to seal dramatic UFL opening victory

The 13th edition of the University Football League (UFL) exploded into life on Thursday at the refurbished Hamz Stadium, delivering a thrilling mix of stalemate, controversy, and a heroic, against-the-odds victory.

The action began with a tense defensive battle as two-time champions Kampala University (KU) held reigning titleholders Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) to a goalless draw. The match was defined by the stellar performance of new KU goalkeeper, Wafula David, whose three superb saves frustrated UMU’s attack and secured a valuable point for coach Vincent Tumusiime.

The evening clash, however, provided the real fireworks. In a dream return from a two-year suspension, Kyambogo University stunned ISBAT University 2-1 in a match packed with drama. Kyambogo shot out of the blocks, with Komakech Emmanuel scoring in the third minute, only for ISBAT’s Akantambira Daniel to level the score just three minutes later.

The game turned on a pivotal moment early in the second half when Kyambogo goalkeeper Mushemeza Edgar was shown a red card, forcing his team to play nearly half an hour with ten men. Against the odds, substitute Odong Ivan broke away on a counter-attack in the 82nd minute to score the winning goal, sealing a famous victory.

The win was not without controversy. ISBAT vehemently protested a missed penalty call moments before Kyambogo’s winner, but the referee waved play on, sparking wild celebrations from the Kyambogo faithful.

The result propels Kyambogo to the top of Group C with a perfect three points, marking a dream return to the competition. Action resumes Friday as 2025 champions Uganda Christian University host Ndejje University in Mukono.
