EC opens desk for nomination queries

Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission
Kampala, Uganda — The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced the establishment of a dedicated help desk to handle queries and complaints related to the nomination of candidates for Uganda’s 2025/2026 General Elections.
According to the Commission, the desk located at its headquarters in Kampala is expected to assist both the public and election officials with various issues, including verification of aspirants on the National Voters’ Register and providing legal guidance during the nomination process.
The Commission has provided toll-free telephone lines to encourage public participation. Members of the public can call without cost on 0800 300121 and 0800 300122, while additional chargeable lines have also been listed. The help desk will operate daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. throughout the nomination period.
Justice Simon Byabakama, the Commission’s chairperson, emphasized that the initiative is intended to promote transparency and ensure concerns are “expeditiously handled.”
While the EC presents the move as a step toward improving electoral integrity, some observers say the measure may not be enough to address deeper concerns about election credibility in Uganda. Past elections have faced criticism over limited access to information, harassment of opposition candidates, and lack of trust in the independence of the Commission.
Analysts argue that a help desk may offer short-term convenience but does little to resolve systemic challenges such as the neutrality of election officials or the security of the voters’ register. Civil society groups are expected to closely monitor whether the desk is accessible to all Ugandans, particularly those in rural areas who often face barriers to communication and political participation.
The nomination period is a critical stage in Uganda’s electoral calendar, as it determines which candidates will appear on the ballot. The Commission’s ability to manage this process transparently will be a key test ahead of the 2026 polls.
