Drivers day out revs back into Kalangala this weekend with tribute and title hunt

The highly anticipated Drivers Day Out returns this Saturday, August 9th, transforming the scenic shores of Kalangala Islands into a motorsport haven. This vibrant annual spectacle sees drivers ferry their competition cars across Lake Victoria for a thrilling one-day festival dedicated to speed, fan passion, and remembrance.

Dubbed “Drivers Day Out,” the event offers motorsport enthusiasts a rare chance to get up close with their favorite drivers and machines before the season’s competitive intensity peaks. The core of the day features drivers battling it out over a special 25km stage, as confirmed by Event Manager Andy Musoke. They will compete fiercely for a coveted trophy and significant prize money.

Fifteen drivers have already confirmed their participation, with the spotlight intensely focused on defending champion Peter Kalule. Kalule, aiming for a historic hat-trick after winning twice in a row, declared his intention clearly: “Trust me, I’m winning this event and taking this trophy to my kids!” A victory this weekend would see him claim the trophy for good.

This year’s event carries a poignant theme, held in memory of the late James Mulowoza, a revered figure who contributed immensely to the growth of Ugandan motorsport before sadly passing away due to COVID-19 in 2019. The event recognizes his lasting legacy.

Victorious drivers won’t just bask in glory; they’ll drive away with an attractive package of cash prizes, medals, and trophies. Organized by the Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU), Drivers Day Out masterfully blends fan interaction with genuine competition, fostering camaraderie before tougher rallies.

This year’s outing is crucial preparation, as drivers will use Kalangala’s challenging terrain to fine-tune their skills and cars for the demanding Fortportal Rally scheduled for August 21st-23rd.
