UNBS cracks down on substandard toilet paper in Kampala and Entebbe
Kampala, Uganda — The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has intensified its enforcement operations, seizing 7,970 rolls of substandard toilet paper in a targeted crackdown across Entebbe and Katanga along Binaisa Road in Kampala.
The operation was triggered by a consumer complaint regarding the sale of unlabelled toilet paper by street vendors. Acting on the tip-off, UNBS inspectors launched an investigation that led to the arrest of four suspects. The individuals are currently detained at Jinja Road Police Station and are expected to appear before the Standards and Utilities Court to face charges related to the possession and sale of substandard goods, in violation of the UNBS Certification Regulations (Amendment), 2022.
UNBS emphasized that it has established strict guidelines to ensure the safety and hygiene of toilet paper products on the Ugandan market. These include:
- US 126:2019 – Toilet paper specification
- US EAS 355-2:2022 – Jumbo toilet tissue paper specification
- US EAS 355-1:2025 – Regular toilet tissue paper specification
