Uganda’s Go-Karting showdown returns!

Uganda’s motorsport scene just shifted into high gear with the launch of the second edition of the National Go-Karting Championship, officially flagged off at Lugogo. The adrenaline-fueled showdown is set for August 2, 2025, at the Lubowa Track, with a packed lineup of seasoned drivers and rising stars.
Headlining the event is rally icon Kevin Bebeto, one of Uganda’s most decorated motorsport competitors, who will join dozens of go-kart racers in what organizers promise will be an action-packed display of speed, skill, and raw racing passion.
Spotlight on emerging talent
Organized under the banner of the Federation of Motorsport Uganda (FMU), the championship aims to cement go-karting as a gateway for nurturing young driving talent across the country.
Speaking at the launch, FMU President Jimmy Akena emphasized the Federation’s commitment to building the sport from the ground up:
“We are dedicated to supporting this baby sport in Uganda,” Akena said. “To elevate standards, an international instructor will soon arrive to assess and guide our competitors.”
Racing into the future
Go-karting in Uganda is no longer a fringe activity. With surging interest among youth and motorsport fans, the championship is evolving into a major national fixture.
Raynold Kibira, the event’s lead organizer, announced plans to host the championship quarterly, transforming it into a regular platform for competition and public engagement:
“The championship will become a quarterly fixture to maintain momentum and visibility for go-karting nationwide,” he said.
Backed by big names
The sport’s rising popularity has not gone unnoticed. Major sponsors such as Mountain Dew and the F1 UG Association are now on board, providing financial and promotional backing to accelerate the championship’s reach.
With growing investment and a swelling fan base, go-karting has become one of the fastest-growing motorsport segments in Uganda, attracting thousands of enthusiastic spectators.
The machines behind the madness
From sleek entry-level karts to high-performance beasts, this year’s championship will feature a wide range of machines. Enthusiasts can expect everything from gravity-powered “Soap Box Derby” karts to Super Karts capable of rivaling full-sized race cars on extended circuits.
The diversity of karts ensures that the event remains both technically demanding and accessible to newcomers, making it a perfect launchpad for Uganda’s next generation of racing stars.
