Uganda teen Mutyaba targets revival at Tunisian giants Sfaxien

Travis Mutyaba unveiling at CS Sfaxien
From Bordeaux setback to North African reboot
In a bid to reboot his career after a challenging stint in Europe, Uganda Cranes playmaker Travis Mutyaba has signed with Tunisian top-flight side CS Sfaxien.
The 19-year-old attacking midfielder joins the Tunisian giants following his departure from historic French club Girondins de Bordeaux.
Mutyaba’s time in France proved tough; despite Bordeaux’s storied past, the club’s current standing in the French fourth tier (National 2) limited his chances. He struggled to find consistent playing time, failing to score or assist in 18 appearances for Les Girondins.
This underwhelming spell abroad stands in contrast to Mutyaba’s rising star back home. Hailed as one of the brightest prospects of his generation in Ugandan football, he made headlines with his flair and creativity during stints at SC Villa, Vipers SC, and briefly at Egyptian powerhouse Zamalek SC. However, converting that domestic promise into international success has so far been a work in progress.
Eyes on redemption and AFCON 2025
The move to eight-time Tunisian Ligue 1 Professionnelle champions CS Sfaxien offers a crucial opportunity for revival. Tunisia’s top league is widely respected as one of the continent’s most competitive, often serving as a launchpad for players seeking to rebuild form and gain exposure.
The timing couldn’t be more critical. With Uganda eyeing a strong performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco this December, regular minutes and good form at Sfaxien could be key to securing Mutyaba’s place in the national team setup.
At Sfaxien, he joins fellow Ugandan international Yunus Sentamu, a proven goal-scorer and key figure in the squad. Founded in 1928, CS Sfaxien boasts an impressive continental record, including three CAF Confederation Cup titles (1998, 2007, 2008).
The club is eager to bounce back from a disappointing seventh-place finish last season, and Mutyaba’s vision and attacking instinct are expected to play a vital role in that mission.
