Uganda targets export boom as China opens door wider at Changsha forum

The Embassy of the Republic of Uganda in Beijing has hosted the Uganda–China (Changsha) Agricultural Trade and Investment Forum, bringing together top officials, investors, and business leaders to strengthen bilateral economic cooperation.

Held on March 19, 2026, in Changsha, the forum ran under the theme “Cultivating Partnerships for Prosperity” and focused on expanding trade and investment opportunities between Uganda and China, particularly with Hunan Province.

Boosting agricultural trade

Uganda’s Ambassador to China, Oliver Wonekha, highlighted emerging opportunities from China’s zero-tariff policy on a range of African exports. She noted that the policy could significantly enhance Uganda’s access to the Chinese market while promoting higher-value agricultural exports.

The forum placed strong emphasis on:

  • Agro-processing and value addition
  • Agricultural mechanization
  • Cold chain logistics
  • Agricultural innovation

Investment and industrial growth

Beyond agriculture, discussions also explored opportunities in tourism, mineral development, and industrialization. A key project spotlighted was the proposed Uganda–Hunan Industrial Park, aimed at accelerating manufacturing and agro-industrial growth.

Participants outlined several strategic goals, including:

  • Increasing Uganda’s agricultural exports to China
  • Attracting foreign direct investment and partnerships
  • Strengthening institutional collaboration
  • Advancing agro-industrialization initiatives

Strengthening bilateral relations

The forum marks a significant step in translating strong diplomatic ties between Uganda and China into tangible economic outcomes. Officials say such engagements are critical to driving job creation, boosting exports, and supporting Uganda’s broader development agenda.

The event underscores growing momentum in Uganda–China relations, with both sides seeking to unlock new opportunities in trade, investment, and industrial transformation.
