Uganda Cranes target strong start against Algeria in CHAN opener

The Uganda Cranes will look to launch their 2024 Total Energies African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign on a high note when they face Algeria in a high-stakes Group C clash tonight at Namboole Stadium (8:00 PM EAT).

This encounter is a rematch of the June 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, where Algeria edged Uganda 2-1 at the same venue. Now co-hosting CHAN 2024 alongside Tanzania, Uganda is eager to carry forward the region’s strong start with Tanzania having already defeated Burkina Faso and Uganda triumphing over DR Congo in their opening games.

Confidence with caution

Cranes captain Allan Okello, who previously played for Algerian side AC Paradou, spoke confidently but cautiously ahead of the match.

“We’ve prepared well and are ready. Algeria has quality, but to advance deep in this tournament, we must get a result against them. Limiting mistakes will be key,” Okello stated.

Home advantage

Head coach Morley Byekwaso, the first Ugandan to lead the national team at CHAN, emphasized the significance of playing on home soil.

“Playing here means making history. We must qualify from the group. With fan support and the advantage of home turf, winning our opener is crucial,” said Byekwaso.

Algeria’s head coach Majid Bougherra acknowledged Uganda’s warm hospitality but is preparing his side for a tough battle.

“Thank you, Uganda, for the warm welcome. Facing the hosts in our opener will be challenging. A full stadium will motivate both teams,” Bougherra commented.

Historical edge

Algeria holds the upper hand historically, having won the teams’ only previous CHAN meeting a 2-0 victory in Sudan during the 2011 edition.

Earlier group C fixture

The day’s Group C action kicks off with Guinea vs Niger at 5:00 PM EAT, also at Namboole Stadium.

Uganda Cranes probable starting XI:
Mutakubwa (GK), Gavin, Mukundane, Odong, Achai, Sserunjogi, Ssebagala, Ssemugabi, Okello (C), Sentamu, Kakande.
