Uganda Cranes make historic comeback to reach CHAN quarterfinals

The Uganda Cranes staged a stunning comeback to secure a 3-3 draw against South Africa, booking their spot in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) quarterfinals for the first time ever. The thrilling match at Mandela National Stadium saw the hosts come from behind twice to top Group C with seven points.

South Africa took the lead through Ramahlwe Mphalele’s equalizer in the 52nd minute, followed by Thabiso Kutumela’s goal five minutes later. Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo added a third for South Africa in the 83rd minute, leaving Uganda on the brink of elimination. However, the Cranes refused to give up.

Substitute Ivan Ahimbisibwe was fouled in the box, and Allan Okello coolly converted the penalty in the 88th minute. In added time, a VAR decision awarded Uganda another penalty, which Rogers Torach converted with nerves of steel.

The draw confirmed Uganda as group leaders, while Algeria finished second with six points. South Africa, despite also having six points, was eliminated due to inferior goal difference.

Uganda will face the runners-up from Group D in the quarterfinals, keeping their dream run on home soil alive. Algeria will play the winners of Group D.
