Uganda Cranes boost: Ikpeazu arrives for World Cup qualifiers

The old saying that ‘opportunity knocks only once’ has never applied to Karl Anthony Ikpeazu. For the powerful striker, the chance to represent Uganda has been a persistent call, one he has finally, and wholeheartedly, answered. Eligible for both Nigeria and Uganda, the gangly forward has ended years of speculation by committing his international future to the Uganda Cranes.

Despite earning consistent call-ups since 2020 under coaches Jonathan McKinstry, Milutin Sredojević, and Paul Put, a frustrating series of obstacles; from injuries to the COVID-19 pandemic prevented his arrival. Now, at long last, the wait is over. Ikpeazu is in Kampala, has joined the team camp in Kisaasi, and completed his first training session at the Mandela National Stadium on Monday. His presence is a major boost for the Cranes as they prepare for crucial FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Mozambique and Somalia.

“It has been a long time coming,” an elated Ikpeazu admitted. “Every time I have been called up, there has been a situation. To finally be here with the national team is amazing. I have not been to Uganda for almost two decades, so I’m excited.” After his first session with the squad, he added, “I feel good. It was important to build a good bond and chemistry with the rest of the team.”

Ikpeazu, who currently plays for St. Johnstone FC in Scotland, now eagerly anticipates the moment he can step onto the pitch in front of the passionate Ugandan fans. “Playing for the national team is a privilege. This is my country, and I’m relishing the opportunity to represent Uganda,” he stated. “Of course, there will be a lot of expectations, and I want to be able to make a difference and help the team. I have seen the incredible support the team gets, and I cannot wait to experience it firsthand.”

His arrival comes at a critical time. Uganda currently sits fourth in Group G with 9 points, needing a strong finish to close the six-point gap to leaders Algeria. Ikpeazu’s commitment and firepower could be the key to unlocking their World Cup qualifying campaign.
