Thrills and drama at National sprint championship round 2 in Garuga

Mubiru takes on Yassin in an epic battle at Garuga Race Park
The second round of the National Sprint Championship in Garuga delivered what is arguably the most intense and competitive racing action of the year so far. With 34 drivers lining up in powerful rally cars, fans were treated to a day of high-speed battles that kept everyone on the edge of their seats.
The excitement kicked off with Motocross Round 6, setting the stage as the day’s thrilling curtain raiser. This was quickly followed by the Double Truck Pairing competition, where drivers showcased exceptional skill across three intense rounds. The CRC category drivers set the initial pace, but it was clear that the real drama was still to come.
As the day unfolded, the action reached new heights with the appearance of the four-wheel-drive rally cars, which took center stage. These machines demonstrated superior agility and control through Garuga’s demanding course, pushing both the drivers and their vehicles to the limit.
Though Yasin Nasser had the upper hand with a dominant performance in his R5, he faced stiff competition from Duncan Mubiru in his Ford Fiesta Proto. Nasser also fielded two additional entries: a Subaru GVB driven by Edson Mungyereza and another piloted by Andy Musoke. Despite Nasser’s early dominance, it was Mubiru who would provide the most exciting challenge.
After Nasser secured victories in the first two rounds of their head-to-head duel, it seemed like a foregone conclusion. However, in the third and final round, Mubiru pulled off a stunning upset, breaking Nasser’s R5 dominance and clinching a crucial victory by mere seconds. The crowd erupted in wild celebrations as the underdog snatched a victory that no one saw coming.
Mubiru, fresh off a car rebuild in Latvia, credited his win to a smarter strategy and perfect execution. “The work done in Latvia and a better game plan made the difference today,” Mubiru said, reflecting on his performance.
This exhilarating sprint event set the perfect stage for the highly anticipated Round 5 of the National Rally Championship, scheduled for August 21st in Fort Portal. With the championship race heating up, fans are already eager to see how the drama unfolds as the season progresses.
