Prudential Uganda launches Airtel Money premium payments
Prudential Uganda has introduced a mobile money payment option that allows customers to pay life insurance premiums instantly via Airtel Money, marking a shift toward digital insurance transactions in Uganda.
The service, developed in partnership with NxtPe, enables policyholders to complete payments directly from their mobile wallets, with transactions reflecting in real time. The move aims to reduce reliance on physical payment channels and address persistent barriers such as travel distance, delays, and missed deadlines.
Uganda’s insurance sector has long faced low penetration, partly due to access challenges and limited integration with commonly used financial tools. Mobile money, already widely used for daily transactions, is increasingly viewed as a pathway to expand financial services including insurance.
Tetteh Ayitevie, CEO of Prudential Uganda, said the integration is designed to align premium payments with existing customer habits. He noted that instant payments could reduce policy lapses linked to delayed or missed payments while simplifying the payment process.
The development may also influence how insurance agents operate. Instant payment confirmation shortens the time between policy sale and activation, a process that has often been slowed by manual systems.
Neelesh, CEO of NxtPe, said the partnership reflects efforts to simplify essential payments. He added that improving payment reliability could strengthen customer trust in long-term financial products such as life insurance.
The rollout comes as insurers in Uganda increase investment in digital channels to tap into the country’s strong mobile money usage. However, analysts say the broader impact on insurance uptake will depend on factors such as affordability, financial literacy, and consumer trust.
Prudential plc, the parent company, operates across Asia and Africa and has been expanding its digital partnerships in emerging markets.
