Police Officer killed, 3 injured in Kyotera road crash

Kyotera, Uganda —A fatal road crash in the early hours of Saturday has left one police officer dead and three others injured along the Mutukula–Kyotera road.

The accident occurred at around 4:00 a.m. at Kasanvu, involving a police Land Cruiser (UP 2914 T) and a Mercedes-Benz trailer (T824 DXF/T529 EFJ).

According to police spokesperson SP Michael Kananura, the police vehicle had been parked next to a checkpoint with officers on board when it was struck by the speeding trailer traveling in the same direction. The trailer lost control, rammed into the stationary Land Cruiser, and came to rest on top of it.

The driver of the police vehicle died instantly, while three other officers sustained injuries. The trailer was being driven by a turn-man, while the main driver was reportedly resting at the time of the crash. The turn-man has been apprehended, and police say efforts to arrest the main driver, who fled the scene, are ongoing.

In a statement, police urged truck drivers to respect speed limits, exercise caution during night hours, and end the practice of letting untrained turn-men operate heavy trucks.

“We extend our condolences to the family of the deceased officer and wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” SP Kananura said.
