Newcastle United have agreed a £55m deal for Brentford forward Yoane Wissa, just a day after the striker publicly urged the Bees to “keep their word” and allow him to leave.
The fee comprises an initial £50m plus £5m in add-ons, with the DR Congo international now travelling to Tyneside to finalize the move.
Brentford had previously rejected two bids from the Magpies earlier in the summer. The breakthrough comes shortly after Liverpool shattered the British transfer record by agreeing a £125m move for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, leaving Eddie Howe scrambling for attacking reinforcements.
Despite recently sealing a club-record signing of German striker Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart, Howe has remained determined to bolster his forward options.
Wissa, 28, publicly confirmed his desire to leave on Sunday, accusing Brentford of “unduly standing in his way”. In an Instagram statement, he declared:
“I have stayed silent for much of the summer, but with just hours remaining of the transfer window I feel compelled to make it clear that I want to leave Brentford.
