Mungyereza dominates second round of National Autocross Championship

Edson Mungyereza delivered a standout performance to win the second round of the National Autocross Championship, held over the weekend at the Sisa track along Entebbe Road. Driving a Subaru GVB, Mungyereza posted the fastest time of the day with 7 minutes and 25.3 seconds to claim first place.

Subaru drivers swept the podium, continuing the brand’s dominance in local rally events.

Humphrey Kawuki, piloting a Subaru N11, finished second with a time of 7 minutes and 44.3 seconds, while Ian Bachu secured third place in a Subaru N8 after clocking 8 minutes and 31.7 seconds.

Strong preparation for upcoming rally

Mungyereza used the race as a tune-up for the Fort Portal Rally scheduled for next month. He described the autocross as an ideal opportunity to test his car and assess performance under competitive conditions, expressing confidence in his setup going forward.

Kawuki, who began his rally career last year, welcomed the strong start to his season. Despite missing out on promotion to the Clubman Rally Championship (CRC) in 2023 due to car preparation challenges, he appears optimistic about his chances this year and believes he is in better shape to compete.

Tough breaks and championship standings

Out of the 15 competitors, only 13 completed the event. Robert Sentongo retired after rolling his vehicle mid-race, while Andy Musoke exited due to mechanical failure.

Sentongo remained unfazed by the incident and confirmed he would return to action at next week’s Garuga sprint event, this time in a different car.

With two rounds completed, Ian Bachu leads the championship standings with 24 points. Mustapha Kanakulya and Edson Mungyereza follow closely, both tied at 20 points, setting up a tight contest for the next rounds.
