FUFA unveils game changing benefits for players in new league revolution

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has detailed a comprehensive package of direct benefits for players in the newly formatted Uganda Premier League (UPL) for the 2025/26 season, marking a significant investment in athlete welfare and league professionalism.

Amid ongoing criticism of the new league structure, FUFA has committed substantial funds to initiatives designed to boost player morale, provide financial security, and enhance on-field performance. The reforms represent a direct financial injection into the pockets and well-being of the league’s athletes.

Medical Insurance: In a major step for player safety, FUFA has partnered with Case MedInsurance to provide comprehensive medical cover for injuries and emergencies. A premium of UGX 480 million has been paid to cover 25 players from each club in both the Uganda Premier League and the FUFA Women Super League.

Direct win bonuses: To immediately reward performance, FUFA has introduced a direct-to-player win bonus scheme. A dedicated fund of UGX 444 million has been allocated to ensure each winning player receives a bonus deposited directly to their mobile money within 48 hours of a victory.

Man of the Match Awards: Individual excellence will be financially rewarded with a dedicated UGX 74 million pool for Man of the Match accolades, recognizing outstanding performers week in and week out.

Enhanced career security & stability: Player contracts are now directly tied to licensing. Players with contracts of two or more years are prioritized for licensing, ensuring job security. Exceptions protect veterans (31+) and players with pre-existing contracts, allowing all athletes to focus on their performance with greater certainty.

More opportunities to play: The new three-round format guarantees each club a minimum of 32 matches, providing more platforms for players to showcase their skills, gain experience, and attract opportunities.

Data-driven development: The introduction of Catapult performance data analysis technology will provide players and coaches with invaluable insights to optimize training, prevent injuries, and make informed decisions to improve their game.

Increased Club prize money: While awarded to clubs, the significant increase in end-of-season prize money is designed to incentivize teams to financially motivate their players throughout the campaign, creating a more competitive environment and giving players “a peaceful mind.”

Despite the debate surrounding the new format, the 2025/26 Uganda Premier League season is confirmed to kick off on Friday, September 26th
