FMU responds to Fort Portal Rally tragedy: Assures safety, clarifies driver’s status

Fort Portal, Uganda – The Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU) has issued an official statement addressing the recent tragic accident at the Fort Portal rally, which left two people dead and sparked violent attacks by local residents targeting rally fans and drivers.

In the statement, FMU expressed condolences and reaffirmed its commitment to driver safety throughout sanctioned events. The federation clarified that driver Godfrey Kirumira, whose car carrier was involved in the accident, had retired earlier from the event due to mechanical failure and was no longer an active competitor at the time of the crash.

The clarification comes amid growing calls from fans and drivers to boycott Fort Portal as a rally venue, citing repeated incidents of mob hostility and safety threats. Several members of the motorsport community argue that holding events in the region puts lives at risk, especially given similar attacks in the past.

“This isn’t the first time we have seen this kind of violence,” said one rally participant. “Something permanent needs to be done before another tragedy occurs.”

While the recent chaos didn’t result in additional deaths during the stone-throwing incidents, numerous vehicles were damaged, and several people were injured as local residents lashed out following the accident.

FMU’s statement brings relief to Uganda’s motorsport fraternity, the largest in Africa and third globally in terms of participation, as they await concrete action on event safety and venue vetting. The federation is expected to convene with stakeholders to review safety protocols and venue suitability.
