EC sets nomination dates for 2026 Local Government elections

Kampala, Uganda — The Electoral Commission of Uganda has announced the official schedule for the nomination of candidates for the 2026 Local Government Councils Elections. The nomination exercise will take place from September 3 to September 24, 2025, across designated centers nationwide.
According to a press release issued by the Commission on August 29, the nomination process will be carried out on weekdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and will be organized according to the various levels of local government.
The nomination schedule is as follows:
District/City Chairpersons, Lord Mayor, and Councillors (including Special Interest Groups):
- Dates: September 3 – 5, 2025
- Venue: Gazetted District/City Nomination Centers
Municipality/City Division Chairpersons and Councillors (including Special Interest Groups):
- Dates: September 8 – 10, 2025
- Venue: Gazetted District/City Nomination Centers
Municipal Division Chairpersons and Councillors (including Special Interest Groups):
- Dates: September 11 – 24, 2025
- Venue: Gazetted District/City Nomination Centers
Sub-County and Town Chairpersons and Councillors (including Special Interest Groups):
- Dates: September 11 – 24, 2025
- Venue: Gazetted County Nomination Centers
The Electoral Commission has urged all aspiring candidates to familiarize themselves with the nomination requirements specific to their desired positions. Detailed nomination guidelines and forms are available at all District Electoral Commission offices and can also be downloaded from the Commission’s official website at www.ec.or.ug.
Speaking through the press release, Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, reiterated the Commission’s dedication to delivering free, fair, and transparent elections. He called on all stakeholders to adhere to the established timelines and guidelines to ensure a smooth nomination process.
This nomination period marks a critical step in Uganda’s preparations for the 2026 General Elections, with local government councils forming the foundation of governance and public service delivery across the country.
