DNA confirms murder of missing Naalya SS student Aneza Merisa
The Territorial Police in Kampala Metropolitan North have opened a murder investigation following the confirmed death of Aneza Merisa, a student at Naalya SS Lugazi Campus, who was reported missing earlier this month.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Kawala Racheal, the case was first reported at Wandegeya Police Station on 6 November 2025 by the victim’s mother, Kamuganga Sarah. She informed police that her daughter, Aneza, had gone missing under unclear circumstances.
On 10 November, a decomposing body was discovered at Musaale Swamp in Namulaba Village, Kyampisi Subcounty, under Nagalama Police Station. The body was found dressed in a navy-blue skirt labeled “Nanyonga VII,” an indication that the victim could have been a student.
Because the body was severely decomposed, mortuary staff in Kayunga proceeded with burial as investigations continued. Police later secured a court order to exhume the remains for proper identification. DNA samples were collected and submitted to the Forensics Headquarters in Naguru.
Kawala Racheal confirmed that the test results positively matched the missing student, officially identifying the remains as those of Aneza Merisa.
“With this confirmation, we are now treating the case as a murder investigation,” Kawala said. “Detectives are following leads to establish the circumstances under which Aneza was killed and her body dumped in the swamp.”
She extended condolences to the family and assured the public that police are committed to bringing those responsible to justice.
The body was handed over to the family for burial on Saturday.
