Denis Onyango’s return to Uganda Cranes sparks hope and debate

The Christian concept of the Second Return signifies a moment of restoration and balance. For Denis Onyango, his own “second return” to the Uganda Cranes carries a similar weight; one of pride, responsibility, and inspiration.

The legendary goalkeeper, who retired from international football in 2021, has made a dramatic comeback to the national team. His recall has stirred mixed reactions: while some believe he still has the quality to reclaim the No.1 spot, others feel his presence may hinder opportunities for emerging goalkeepers.

Nonetheless, Onyango is delighted to be back. He took part in the Cranes’ first training session ahead of their upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Mozambique and Somalia.

“First of all, I’m happy to be back for round two. It was good news for me because I was in the team camp when the call-up came. I shared the news with the boys, and they were very happy because they all knew I had retired, but some of them wanted to see me back probably for the final time,” Onyango said.

Beyond his role between the posts, the veteran sees himself as a motivator for the younger generation.
“For the boys, some I’ve played with and others I’m just getting to know. But it’s a young, energetic group and they will probably fight for me. Every team needs both senior and young players; the young blood brings energy while the seniors calm things down when there’s pressure.”

When asked if his return blocks opportunities for other goalkeepers, Onyango was quick to dismiss the notion.
“There are no guarantees in football. Whoever is ready to represent the country and gets the chance should do well. At the end of the day, the target is to win games.”

Uganda will host Mozambique on Friday before facing Somalia on Monday. The Cranes currently sit fourth in Group G with nine points, six behind leaders Algeria.
