CHAN 2024: Uganda Cranes eye historic quarterfinal berth as Bafana Bafana fight for survival

The Uganda Cranes stand on the brink of history as they prepare to face South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in a decisive Group C clash at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

With six points from two matches, Morley Byekwaso’s side needs only a draw to secure their first-ever TotalEnergies Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) quarterfinal qualification after seven previous failed attempts.

A victory would not only cement their knockout-stage place but also ensure Uganda plays the quarterfinal on home soil—a prospect that has ignited the nation’s football passion.

Uganda’s moment of destiny

Byekwaso acknowledged the high stakes but remained confident in his team’s readiness. “We know it will be a very tough game, but we are prepared. This is our chance to make history. We’re leading the group and must maintain the discipline that got us here,” he said.

The Cranes will lean on their solid defensive record and home support, with a packed Namboole expected to roar them on. However, they face a resilient South African side desperate to keep their tournament hopes alive.

Bafana Bafana’s do-or-die mission

South Africa, sitting third with just one point, must win to have any chance of progression. Coach Molefi Ntseki remains defiant, drawing inspiration from past triumphs in hostile environments. “This is our final. The pressure is on Uganda they’re at home and expected to win. But we’ve thrived under such conditions before, like when we beat Egypt in Cairo. We’ll exploit transitions and stay disciplined,” Ntseki stated.

Alternative scenarios

Uganda could still advance even with a loss if Niger fails to upset Algeria in the concurrent Group C match at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi. However, Algeria, needing a win to progress, will push hard to keep their campaign alive.

Absences

Uganda will miss suspended midfielder Joel Sserunjogi, leaving Byekwaso with a selection dilemma. Youngster Elvis Ngonde is the likely replacement, though center-back Arnold Odong could also slot into the defensive midfield role.

Uganda Cranes Probable XI:

1. Mutakubwa (GK)
2. Gavin
3. Achai
4. Torach (C)
5. Mukundane
6. Odong
7. Ssebagala
8. Watambala
9. Okello
10. Mpande
11. Ssemugabi

What’s at stake?

– Uganda: A draw secures history; a win guarantees a home quarterfinal.
– South Africa: Must win to stay alive; any other result sends them home.
– Algeria vs. Niger: A win for Algeria complicates Uganda’s path if they lose.

As the drama unfolds, Uganda’s quest for a maiden CHAN knockout berth hangs in the balance—while Bafana Bafana fight for survival in a must-win encounter.
