Airtel Africa unveils 20 Ugandan STEM scholars under UGX 3.85 billion tech fellowship
Uganda’s next generation of technology leaders has taken a major step forward following the unveiling of the inaugural cohort of the Airtel Africa Tech Fellowship, a UGX 3.85 billion programme designed to fully support 20 outstanding students from underprivileged backgrounds pursuing studies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Launched by the Airtel Africa Foundation, the initiative is easing the financial burden on talented young Ugandans while positioning them to drive innovation in fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, healthcare technology, renewable energy, and digital inclusion.
Among the beneficiaries is Edgar Baluku, a Computer Science student at Uganda Christian University, who said the scholarship has lifted the weight of tuition from his family, allowing him to focus fully on his studies.
At ISBAT University, Akatuha Jordan Byaruhanga is pursuing Networking and Cybersecurity with ambitions of protecting digital systems and communities, while fellow student Khautharah Kanyange described the scholarship as a turning point after three years of financial struggle.
Several fellows are enrolled at Makerere University, including Mubiru Isaac, Matovu Juma Kikonyogo, and Kisakye Patricia (Software Engineering); Ojambo Nicholas (Computer Science); Nakidde Rishaliz (Information Systems and Technology); Bifandhuba Elisha Alvin and Jasifa Ssegawa (Computer and Communications Engineering); and Rashida Kalinzi Nassuna.
From Mbarara University of Science and Technology, beneficiaries include Atugonza Melissa Ateenyi, who hopes to expand access to mental health care through technology; Nyakato Gloria (Information Technology); and Mukiibi Michael Kirinnya (Computer Science).
At Kyambogo University, Kizito Gilbert, pursuing Information Technology and Computing, reflected on the sacrifices his parents made to support his education, while Kisakye Esther Faith sees the fellowship as the opportunity that will finally bring her dream of becoming a software engineer within reach.
Other fellows, including Daniel Manige and additional cohort members across partner universities, share ambitions of advancing innovation across Uganda’s growing digital economy.
Commenting on the programme, Airtel Uganda Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Soumendra Sahu, said the initiative aims to empower the next generation of innovators and leaders who will shape Africa’s digital future.
