47 youth rescued in Nsangi after being lured by fake online job offers
Police at Nsangi Police Division have rescued 47 victims in what authorities describe as a suspected human trafficking and exploitation scheme targeting young people from various regions of Uganda.
According to Kawala Racheal, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, the victims aged between 16 and 30 were trafficked from districts including Mbarara, Bushenyi, Kabale, Ntungamo, Mityana, and parts of the Busoga region. They were reportedly lured with promises of online employment opportunities after participating in financial literacy training sessions.
The rescue operation was initiated after one of the victims escaped from the facility and notified authorities. Information provided by the escapee guided security teams to the location where the rest of the victims were being kept.
Police investigations have linked the recruitment to a company identified as Dream Visionaries, operating under Alliance in Motion Global. Kawala Racheal said efforts to arrest the company’s director and others connected to the operation are ongoing.
Investigators report that the company targeted vulnerable youth by charging a registration fee of 150,000 shillings. Upon arrival, the victims were confined to cramped rooms and denied communication after their phones were confiscated for six days. After this period, each victim was ordered to call their families and demand 1.5 million shillings described as start up capital.
Authorities believe the operation was designed to extort money from families under the guise of business training and online job opportunities.
All 47 victims are currently receiving care and support at Nsangi Police Division as investigations continue. Kawala Racheal urged the public to be alert and report suspicious recruitment schemes, especially those promising quick income to unemployed youth.
