10 killed, 3 injured in horrific Bugiri minibus crash – Police urge caution
Bugiri, Uganda – Ten people have died and three others sustained injuries following a tragic road accident this morning at around 7:00 am in Busowa Town Council along the Busia Highway.
The crash involved a Toyota Hiace minibus (registration UBN 817H) traveling from Busia to Kampala and a stationary packing trailer (registration UA 647BA/UA 430AA). According to SP Kananura Michael, Community Liaison Officer and Public Relations Officer for the Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety, the driver of the Hiace attempted to overtake an unidentified vehicle when another vehicle approached from the opposite direction. In a bid to avoid a head-on collision, the driver swerved left, lost control, and collided with the trailer.
“All ten fatalities, including the driver, were occupants of the Toyota Hiace,” SP Kananura Michael confirmed. “Three others sustained injuries and were rushed to Bugiri District Hospital. The bodies of the deceased have been conveyed to the hospital mortuary.”
He urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads, avoid reckless overtaking, and prioritize safety, noting that such unsafe behaviors remain major contributors to road accidents across Uganda.
The incident has left the Bugiri community in shock, highlighting the ongoing dangers on major highways and the need for increased vigilance among drivers.
